 The Community
Population

Caldwell is a town of about 40,000 friendly and down-to-earth people.  Including smaller towns, the hospital draws from a population totaling more than 90,000.  The community’s small town feel offers a quiet escape from the faster-paced life that is currently developing in Boise.

Recreation

Caldwell is situated in an ideal location because of its close proximity to a variety of outdoor activities (the Owyhee mountain range to the west and the Sawtooth range to the East).  We also have a lake and several great hiking and fishing locations.  In the summer we have rodeos, fairs, and local sporting events.  Multiple ski resorts are just a short drive away during the winter.  Southwest Idaho is also well known for its whitewater rafting and mountain biking.  In addition to being so close to the great outdoors, Caldwell is just 25 minutes west of Boise, which is Idaho’s capital and home to cultural events, shopping, entertainment, restaurants, the Boise philharmonic and a yearly Shakespeare Festival.

Education

There are two excellent school districts in town, Caldwell and Vallivue.  Private schools in the area are also available.  In terms of higher education, Caldwell is home to Albertson College of Idaho, and Northwest Nazarene University is located in Nampa, a town of about 80,000 that is situated southeast of Caldwell by a few miles.  Both schools are consistently ranked among the best liberal arts schools in the Northwest.  Boise State University, the largest university in the state, is not far away (Home of the 2007 Fiesta Bowl Champions).

Diversity

A variety of ethnic groups can be found in Caldwell, including 50% Caucasian, 30% Hispanic, and 20% other races.  Like the core program in Boise, we have a wide variety of opportunities to serve the underserved.

Climate

Caldwell is a town that experiences four true seasons.  The average high temperatures in January and July are 37˚F and 89˚F, respectively.  The average lows in January and July are 24˚F and 60˚F.  Spring and autumn are mild.  Our community experiences sunshine for a great portion of the year, even during the winter months.

Housing

Most RTT residents buy a house in Caldwell or Nampa at the beginning of Residency and commute to Boise during the first year.  Housing is very affordable on just a resident’s salary in either Caldwell or Nampa.  For instance, a 1450 square foot home that is about five years old in a nice neighborhood costs about $125,000 (approx. $800/month mortgage payment).
