 Idaho Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship

Purpose: The primary care sports medicine fellowship is a 12-month program of special training experience designed to provide an environment for the primary care physician to develop clinical competency in applying her/his knowledge, skills, and attitudes to those engaged in sport and exercise.

Content: The Family Medicine Residency of Idaho focuses on patient care in the context of the family and the community. With the development of the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship, not only will the fellow follow the family medicine tradition, but may incorporate the knowledge of sport and exercise in caring for patients of all ages. The fellow will be provided with an experience sufficient to acquire the competence of a physician with added qualifications in this field.  

Areas covered will include:

  • Physiology and biomechanics of exercise.
  • Basic nutritional principles and their application to exercise.
  • Psychological aspects of exercise, performance, and competition.
  • Guidelines for evaluation prior to participation in exercise.
  • Physical conditioning requirements for various activities.
  • Pathology and pathophysiology of illness and injury as it relates to exercise.
  • Effects of disease on exercise and the use of exercise in the care of medical problems.
  • Prevention, evaluation, management, and rehabilitation of injuries.
  • Understanding pharmacology and the effects of therapeutic, performance-enhancing, and recreational drugs.
  • Promotion of physical fitness and healthy lifestyles.
  • Functioning as a team physician.
  • Ethical principles as applied to exercise and sport.
  • Medical-legal aspects of exercise and sport.
  • Anatomy related to exercise.
  • Growth and development related to exercise

The Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship is a multi-disciplinary program located primarily at the Idaho Sports Medicine Institute (ISMI) and functionally integrated with the Family Medicine Residency of Idaho (FMRI). The fellow will also work with surrounding facilities and personnel at Boise State University, some private local physicians' offices, a minor league Baseball team (Boise Hawks) and an area high school. Time will generally be shared between the ISMI and FMRI sites.

Application for Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship

 Curriculum / Rotations

The curriculum is designed to prepare the fellow for Primary Care Sports Medicine in many settings. During a 12-month commitment, the Fellow will allocate time as follows: 10% family medicine, 40% Sports Medicine, 20% surgery (orthopedic), 10% didactic, 10% research and study time. In addition, they will attend specific lectures pertaining to sport and exercise, as well as cover training room evaluations at area high schools and Boise State University three times a week. Event coverage of games on Friday and Saturday evenings will also be incorporated.

Note: Call is optional (FM call with FMRI). No hospital attending. May do obstetrics if desired.
         May moonlight if it does not interfere with the fellow's duties.
